Les petites fugues ha aperto il festival di Locarno 1979, e anche alcune polemiche. Per alcuni è un'opera freschissima, nata dall'istinto di un cineasta indubbiamente sensibile, e da un cinema che recentemente sembra vedere inaridirsi i suoi temi tradizionali. Per altri il film di Yves Yersin è di una naturalezza ricostruita, di una falsa semplicità. La vicenda del vecchio bracciante agricolo che, incassata l'AVS, parte finalmente alla scoperta del mondo, della vita, della libertà, è densa di fascino, interpretata da Michel Robin con grande bravura. La fattoria finisce col rappresentare la nostra società, con le proprie contraddizioni ed il proprio potere alienante. La fuga impossibile di Pipe, un bisogno, tipicamente legato a delle società ben ordinate come la nostra, di ritrovare nella rivolta, anche umile, la propria identità, la propria immagine autentica.

Al film di di Yersin, per molti versi attentissimo, manca forse qualcosa, la misura. Non solo il film è lungo, non perfettamente costruito drammaticamente. Ma ogni sequenza, ogni effetto, dura qualcosa di troppo. Pipe che impara a guidare il motorino è divertentissimo, ma tirato alla lunga. L'aliante che compare in cielo è simbolo di magia e di evasione, ma Pipe finisce per inseguirlo troppo a lungo. Pipe che scopre la fotografia è commovente: ma al centesimo effetto sull'argomento, il tono scade. Persino il personaggio centrale, umanissimo, finisce col saturarsi di troppe annotazioni caratteristiche. Les petites fugues è sicuramente uno dei film svizzeri più sentiti degli ultimi anni. Con un rigore maggiore (ma possibile che Yersin e compagni non ci siano arrivati?) sarebbe stato quel piccolo capolavoro che l’ultimo nostro cinema sta attendendo.

Les petites fugues opened the Locarno festival 1979, and also some controversy. For some it is a very fresh work, born from the instinct of an undoubtedly sensitive filmmaker, and from a cinema that recently seems to have seen its traditional themes dry up. For others, Yves Yersin's film is of a reconstructed naturalness, of a false simplicity. The story of the old farm worker who, having received the AVS, finally sets out to discover the world, life, freedom, is full of charm, played by Michel Robin with great skill. The farm ends up representing our society, with its own contradictions and its own alienating power. Pipe's impossible escape, a need, typically linked to well-ordered societies like ours, to rediscover one's own identity in the revolt, even if humble,their authentic image.

Yersin's film, in many ways very attentive, is perhaps missing something, the measure. Not only is the film long, not perfectly constructed dramatically. But every sequence, every effect, lasts for something too long. Pipe that learns to drive the moped is great fun, but pulled in the long run. The glider that appears in the sky is a symbol of magic and evasion, but Pipe ends up chasing it for too long. Pipe that discovers photography is moving: but at the hundredth effect on the subject, the tone expires. Even the central character, very human, ends up saturating himself with too many characteristic annotations. Les petites fuguesit is certainly one of the most popular Swiss films of recent years. With greater rigor (but is it possible that Yersin and his companions did not get there?) It would have been that little masterpiece that our latest cinema is waiting for.
